#3. Green Lantern (2011) | Own The Green Lantern ($10 @ Amazon.com)
Why it shouldn’t have flopped: It could have built on — or at least followed — the formula of predecessors like Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), which took an extraordinary set of events and made them as believable as possible without overloaded NES-style computer graphics.
Why it flopped: Too much cartoony CGI, flimsy story lead to an embarrassing $90,074,414 loss.
What could have saved it: As for the directing, you’d expect the guy who did Golden Eye (1995) and The Mask of Zoro (1998) to put out something better with a $200m budget. That is, until you realize director Martin Cambell also directed Vertical Limit (2000) and a bunch of other garbage nobody bothered to see.
