#7. “Hackensack” | Fountains of Wayne (2003) | Listen: Welcome Interstate Managers ($15 MP3 / $13 CD @ Amazon.com)
Strike one: The band took its name from a lawn ornament store in Wayne, New Jersey.
Strike two: The song is about a kid working for his dad in Hackensack while pining for a girl who went off to L.A. “That seems to be where everybody else ends up these days.”
Strike three: He tells her, “If you ever get back to Hackensack / I’ll be here for you.”
Yeah, keep waiting, pal. Sure, Hackensack is a nice city … but for New Jersey.
