Powerful Yogurt is yogurt for men — specifically, for guys who want to “find your inner abs.” In reality, it’s an all-new form of superhealthy ultrayogurt pretty much the same as any other fat-free Greek yogurt. Which is to say, it’s very good for you: There’s lots of protein (Powerful has a little more than the average Green yogurt), calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and probiotics. So what makes Powerful Yogurt a yogurt for men? Maybe it’s the … rugged promotional ads?
The truth is that pretty much any plain yogurt — in other words, one that isn’t loaded with sugar for flavor — is good for you. And no, Greek yogurt isn’t necessarily imported from Greece; if yogurt is Greek, it just means the water and whey have been strained out. As a result, Greek yogurt has a creamier texture and nearly double the protein of regular yogurt, which makes it an ideal post-workout snack.
And we can’t stress this enough: When you’re eating yogurt, it’s not the fat content you need to concern yourself with — it’s the added sugar. Since yogurt is derived from milk, all yogurts contain lactose (sugar); about 12 grams per 6 oz. for regular plain yogurt, and 5.5 grams for plain Greek yogurt. Powerful Yogurt has 25 grams of protein and 9 grams of sugar, but it also has stevia — a natural zero-calorie sweetener. (Usually, when a yogurt label says it’s free from “added sugar,” that most likely means it contains artificial sweeteners.) When the sugar content in yogurt is in excess of 20 or 30 grams per serving, leave it on the shelf; you may as well eat a Snickers. Instead, buy plain yogurt and sweeten it yourself with fresh fruit or a little honey.
