The Russian cross-country skier was stripped of the gold medal she won at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics after testing positive for high levels of erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that controls red blood cell production. She put it down to “female physiology.” We assume she meant that she was a woman who was taking a banned substance.
